Biography
Leila May Jackson
Leila May Jackson is a Kent born artist, currently based in Surrey. Sharing their lived experience as a fat, queer, mentally ill woman, through mixed media works. Their practice ranges from text, sculpture, screen print, painting, photography and textiles. At the heart of all of their pieces is language. They are constantly trying to initiate conversation and debate with their work, hoping to also raise awareness for the issues represented within their art.
Growing up with a single mother, below the poverty line, becoming a survivor of domestic abuse and suicide has shaped Jackson’s world view irreversibly. They have developed into an advocate and outspoken intersectional feminist. Their upbringing is something that repeatedly humbles them and is the roots they constantly go back to. Although their is a great deal of trauma, there are also lessons. Jackson doesn’t shy away from making the private public, if it means it will create a dialogue. Their is always an underlying need for complete freedom of self expression, identity and need for connection within their art.
“If someone sees my work and relates and has shared a similar experience then maybe we both won’t feel so alone in it?”
Jackson has always had a natural flair for creativity and dramatics, which meant studying art academically was a clear path. They have received a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from UCA Rochester in 2016. They are currently completing their BA in Fine Art at UCA Farnham.
